The latest version of our Thunderbolt paper adds more information on the Intel Thunderbolt chips available and important comparisons between Thunderbolt 3 and Thunderbolt 4.

Here's just a snippet of the updated information -

At the core of any genuine Thunderbolt 3 or Thunderbolt 4 product will be an Intel chip.

You can differentiate whether your device supports Thunderbolt 3 or Thunderbolt 4 by identifying this Intel chip.

An Intel Titan Ridge chip typically identified JHL7440 is Thunderbolt 3, whilst Intel Goshen Ridge JHL8440 is the latest Thunderbolt 4 device controller typically used in Thunderbolt 4 peripherals and docking stations. The very latest Thunderbolt chip to be released by Intel is Maple Ridge JHL8540 and JHL8340. The Maple Ridge chip will be used in computers and devices such as tablets. It was announced in late 2020 and has only just begun to appear in Thunderbolt products in 2021.

The availability of the Maple Ridge chip is important for Thunderbolt 4 as it allows manufacturers the opportunity to build multiple thunderbolt ports into their products. The Maple Ridge chip has allowed multiple new features such as PCIe peer-to-peer support as well as Access Control Services for higher security.

Thunderbolt 4 has also provided greater bandwidth over Thunderbolt 3, providing the full 32Gbps PCIe data bandwidth as opposed to the 22Gbps available with Thunderbolt 3.
